HR during sleep

I just got a Garmin 410 recently, and I was curious what my resting HR was like when I slept, so I wore my heart rate monitor to sleep last night:) I am really surprised by the result. I realised that the HR while sleeping is not a constant one; in fact it rises and dips all the time, hitting a high of 76 and a low of 40. I see the long straight lines that show the HR spiking up and I honestly wonder what was happening to my body when the HR spikes up close to 20 bpm within a couple of minutes.
